AKC Group: Sporting Group The Welsh Springer Spaniel dog is a medium sized hunting dog. Sometimes also called the Welsh Springer, Welsh Cocker Spaniel, and the Welsh Starter, this breed only coat colors are red and white. With a high intelligence level, this dog excels in many different types of dog trials. HistoryDuring the Renaissance, the "Land Spaniel," a Welsh Springer type dog having white and red markings, was often seen on paintings. This dog was bred to hunt small game on land and in the water. Thanks to his webbed feet, he makes a great swimmer. During the 1700's, the dog was very popular with the upper class. But it soon lost its standing to the English Springer Spaniel. Thanks to a small number of breeders, it was saved from extinction though.Physical FeaturesThe Welsh Springer Spaniel dog is a medium sized dog that stands between 18 and 19 inches high. The body is slightly longer than it is high. Adult dogs normally weigh between 35-45 pounds. The eyes are normally brown in color, and ears hang down.In comparison to the English Springer spaniel, the Welsh Springer spaniel's are a little bit smaller, and they only come in red and white. The hair normally lays flat, and there is feathering of it on the back of the legs, chest, ears and tail. PersonalityThe Welsh Springer Spaniel dog is a lively dog showing an affectionate and loyal disposition. Although cautious with strangers, he is not fearful of them. Today he remains a passionate family member and hunting partner.Common Health ProblemsThe Welsh Springer Spaniel dog is susceptible to entropion, epilepsy and hip dysplasia. Also due to due to the long ear, they're prone to ear infections.
