Whippet Dog

AKC Group: Hound Group

The Whippet dog is a lean and extremely fast hound dog. They look very similar to the Greyhound, and they're very popular among people who race dogs. When it comes to coat color, there is a wide variety of colors available. Although they require a lot of exercise, they are very gentle and friendly.

Having been around for hundreds of years, it was not until 1891 that official acknowledgement was handed to the Whippet dog by the EKC. Utilized for racing in early stages, the dog was nicknamed "the poor man's racehorse." Whippets were very first taken to America by the English mill workers of Massachusetts, which for several years was the biggest area for Whippet races in this nation. Later on the sport transferred south to Maryland, specifically in Baltimore.

Physical Features

Whippet dogs are very lean and muscular in appearance. The ideal height is between 19 and 22 inches. The coat color can be any color and can range from black, white, cream, red, and many others. The normal adult weight can reach up to 30 pounds.

The head is very small in comparison to the body. The ears hang over. The legs are long and lean. The tail is also long and hangs down to the hocks if it is not docked.

The Whippet is affectionate, docile, intelligent, lively and sweet. This very loyal friend is calm and quiet in the house. The Whippet shouldn't be toughly trained, for they're very sensitive both mentally and physically. They're good with kids of any age provided that the kids don't roughhouse or mock the dog. Whippets are nice and clean, virtually scent free, easy to tend to and easy to go somewhere with. They're good watchdogs. They'll chase and kill cats and various small rodents if given the chance, but they are great with other dogs.

Common Health Problems

Whippet dogs have an average life span of 12-15 years. The are susceptible to skin problems and stomach upset. Other problems include hip dysplasia, and retained testicles.
