Why do Dogs eat Grass?
by Dr. Chris
December 30, 2008 Why do dogs eat grass? This is a common question that most veterinarians get asked by their clients. Almost everyone has a theory as to why dogs eat grass. Some of the more common reasons suggested as to why dogs eat grass are:
1)They are sick and need to vomit 2)They have a dietary deficiency
A recent article by Dr. Hart, from UC-Davis suggests a third more likely cause.
After reviewing numerous behavior studies and surveying lots of owners, Dr. Hart suggests it is just a natural behavior that dogs have that evolved from wild canids.
One reason suggested for this is that wild dogs, in order to get rid of intestinal parasites would ingest grass to help them purge intestinal parasites.
One point to support this theory is that puppies eat grass more often than adults. Puppies more susceptible to worms, and therefore more likely to benefit from eating grass.
Monkeys are also often observed eating leaves in the wild. It is believed that these leaves increase intestinal tract mobility and help to purge any intestinal parasites.
