World's First Dog Flu Vaccine Approvedby Dr. Chris
July 16, 2010 Yesterday it was announced that Schering-Plough Animal Health had their new vaccine, Nobivac Canine Flu H3N8 approved. This is the first vaccination fully licensed by the USDA after a whole year of safety and efficacy use in almost half a million dogs. The USDA approving this vaccine is an acknowledgment that many dogs may need to be protected against dog flu which can be fatal as disease outbreaks continue to occur across the nation. The first apparent case of dog flu was in Florida in 2004. Since that time canine influenza has been found in 33 states. Does My Dog Need the Dog Flu Vaccine?Whether or not your dog needs a dog flu vaccination depends on the area that you live and where your dog travels to. If your dog travels a lot to dog shows and breeding facilities it might be a good idea to have your dog vaccinated. If on the other hand your dog rarely leaves your house and just stays around the backyard, odds are they will not be exposed to the dog flu. But it's best to talk to your local veterinarian to see if there have been any outbreaks in your area. Dog flu is highly contagious and can rapidly infect a large number of dogs. Nobivac Canine Flu H3N8 should be available soon at your local veterinary clinic.
